Who is Baha’u’llah?

All of the world’s major religions, and even Native American prophecies, foretell the coming of a Promised One who will establish the unity of mankind and the Kingdom of God on Earth. Baha’is believe that these prophesies were fulfilled in the life and teachings of Baha’u’llah, the founder of the Baha’i Faith.

In 1863, Baha’u’llah announced that He was God’s Messenger for this age. He was born in 1817 to a prominent family in Persia, where His father was a minister in the court of the Shah. His name was Mirza Husayn Ali, but he identified himself with the title Baha'u'llah, which means “The Glory of God.”

Baha'u'llah became known for His generosity, kindness and concern for the poor. Stripped of all His worldly endowments, He was subjected to imprisonment, torture and a series of banishments. He was exiled to Baghdad, Constantinople, Adrianople, and finally to the prison-city of Akka, Israel, where He arrived as a prisoner in 1868. He passed away in 1892 in Baji, north of Akka, and is buried there.

In His teachings and sacred writings, Baha’u’llah claimed that His divine mission is to bring about the spiritual rebirth and the unity of mankind, and the establishment of world peace. He warned of the moral and social decay facing humanity.
Baha'u'llah addressed a series of letters to the rulers of His day that proclaimed the coming unification of humanity and the emergence of a world civilization.

“The All-Knowing Physician hath His finger on the pulse of mankind. He perceiveth the disease, and prescribeth, in His unerring wisdom, the remedy. Every age hath its own problem, and every soul its particular aspiration. The remedy the world needeth in its present-day afflictions can never be the same as that which a subsequent age may require. Be anxiously concerned with the needs of the age ye live in, and center your deliberations on its exigencies and requirements. “
